Licensing FAQ's

What is the difference between an Annual and Perpetual License?

Review the advantages of our annual and perpetual licenses to help you decide on the licensing model that best fits your organization.

Annual licenses, also known as subscription or software as a service licenses, are often the most cost-effective solution for an organization as license fees are spread evenly over the life of the contract and all updates, upgrades, and technical support are included in the licensing fee. In addition, annual licenses are usually purchased out of an organization's operating budget, which can be easier to access than capital budgets.

Perpetual licenses are the opposite of annual licenses. In the perpetual model of licensing, you make an upfront, one-time purchase of the license. The main benefit of a perpetual license is that it can provide the best return on investment over the long term. However, perpetual licenses are typically purchased from an organization's capital budget and not the operational budget. Capital budgets are often harder to access and you never know how easy or difficult it will be in the future to make changes and add licenses.

Although perpetual licenses only include maintenance for the first year, you can purchase additional coverage that includes all updates, upgrades, and technical support.

Guideline for the FreeD License

You may only use Dragonfly 3D World under the terms of a relevant license agreement. The applicable license agreement depends on your use of the software, which can be summarized as follows:

  • FreeD License is subject to the terms of our Dragonfly FreeD Agreement. Named licenses are granted free-of-charge to qualified researchers, academics, and non-commercial developers for non-profit research, academic study, or development purposes only. FreeD licenses are valid for a one-year period and can be renewed annually at no charge.
  • Any use of Dragonfly 3D World for commercial purposes requires a commercial license. Commercial licenses are available as an annual subscription or as a perpetual license.

Please note that it is in Comet Technologies Canada’s sole discretion to grant a FreeD license and that there is no general obligation for Comet Technologies Canada to grant this license free-of-charge. When determining whether or not a certain applicant shall receive a FreeD license based on such applicant’s intended use of the software, Comet Technologies Canada will consider, amongst other factors, academic research or other activities that are not undertaken for financial gain, advantage, or other reward and that are not intended to produce works, services, or data for commercial use.

How do I convert the trial version to the full version?

Commercial users need to purchase a commercial license, while non-commercial users must request a non-commercial license to lift all restrictions from the software.

What are the limitations of the trial version?

Trial versions provide access to all Dragonfly included features. A 30-day time limit starts at first launch.
